Greig Coates MD JD is a medical doctor and a seasoned trial lawyer.

For the last thirty-three years, Dr. Coates has successfully represented victims and their families in every conceivable type of medical malpractice lawsuit–from single-physician cases to complex litigation involving over a dozen doctors, NPs, PAs, and several hospitals.

Dr. Coates has taken several thousand adverse physician depositions in his career—of both defendant doctors as well as experts—that have involved every known physician specialty and sub-specialty. He has taken almost as many depositions involving hospital personnel such as nurses, techs, and administrators. Greig has tried several dozen cases to successful verdicts.

Greig will be involved in your case from the beginning. If he thinks Coates & Johnson might be able to help, we will request and review your medical records to determine if your case has merit. If he believes it might, Greig will then hire physician experts to see if their opinions support a lawsuit. If so, Greig will write your lawsuit and be involved in the critical depositions of the physicians and other care providers.

Greig was appointed by the New Mexico Supreme Court to the Ad Hoc Committee to Review the Operation of the New Mexico Medical Review Commission and the Medical Malpractice Act, 2021. He has testified before the New Mexico legislature, providing legislators insight how proposed changes to the Medical Malpractice Act would affect patients and their rights.

Greig believes that bridging the divide between the medical system and the legal system is important. He believes a better understanding between these two groups is helpful for both sides, and is important to a safe and healthy society. To that end, he speaks to physician groups and hospitals about the law and its role in medicine. He most recently presented at Grand Rounds to the Urology Department at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.
